Baby Emma Sneak Peek

Today was such a monumental day of learning ... it was my very first "official" Newborn Session.  Baby Emma was a wonderful, sweet, and beautiful model.  I had so much fun talking with her mom and dad and just enjoying Emma's sweet company.  It was so hard to narrow down my choices to only a few photographs to create this "sneak peek."  Enjoy!

Tips for a Successful Newborn Session

How do I make the most out of my little one's Newborn Session?

This is a question you might be asking your self in preparation for your scheduled newborn photography session, and I hope the following information helps:

1.  Plan to Stay Awhile:
Newborn Sessions typically last 3-4 hours (sometimes a bit less or more) from start to finish.  This is partially to allow for positioning your baby in poses to create beautiful images and partially just to keep your little one comfortable.  A newborn session will include time for feeding, changing, and soothing your baby to sleep.  Usually, the best photographs can be captured when your newborn is VERY deeply sleeping, so I will allow time for this to happen.  Your little one will dictate the pace of the session as well as the poses I am able to capture.

2.  Come Prepared:
Because of the length of newborn sessions, please bring adequate supplies to feed and care for your baby.  If you are breastfeeding or pumping, I will provide privacy for you to do so.  If you are formula feeding, please bring 3-4 bottles to your session.  You are welcome to use my refrigerator for storage!  Don't forget plenty of diapers, wipes, or any special items that comfort your little one.

3.  Dress for Success:
If you are comfortable, almost all photographs will be taken of your newborn in his/her birthday suit.  If family members would like to be in the photographs as well, please keep in mind that solid (esp. black and white) colors will make nicer images and not distract from your baby.  If you would like to wear patterns, please keep them soft and simple.  If possible, please remove any dark fingernail polish as well as I may capture detailed photographs of you holding your newborn close.  Also, parents please DRESS IN LAYERS!  Because newborns are most comfortable warm and snuggly, my home studio will be VERY WARM.  You may wish to layer a light sleeveless shirt underneath the shirt you will wear in your photographs.

4.  Bring Your Ideas:
I welcome your personal ideas and opinions as I photograph your newborn.  Your satisfaction is what I strive to meet, so please voice your opinions.  If you do not like a pose or prop I am using, please tell me!  If you would like me to try a certain pose, please let me know that as well.  Also, feel free to bring any special family items to your session, and I will do my best to incorporate them into your images.

5.  Remember that Safety Really Is First:
I will try my best to provide you with creative, unique, and lovely images of your newborn.  However, your newborn's safety is my (and your) first priority.  If I feel a pose is unsafe in any way, I will not attempt it.  Likewise, if you are EVER uncomfortable with any position or prop I am using with your baby, please tell me right away!  Please remember that not every baby likes every pose (even if you have seen a particular pose in the past).  Your little one will truly be the one deciding which images I am able to successfully capture.

Most importantly, relax and have fun!  Your baby's Newborn Session will capture precious and fleeting moments.  Don't blink!

The Hershey Family

This morning I had the honor of shooting my first "official" family session for dear friends of mine, the Hershey family.  Our good intentions to start early proved beneficial for excellent lighting ... however, we still didn't manage to beat the August heat!  The Hershey kids were absolute troopers.  Here's a sneak peek of our session:
